Each of the country's 10 Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) has delivered new or expanded psychological therapy services in their area since 2008.
They have commissioned higher education institutions to train the workforce, using the approved IAPT national curricula for high and low intensity therapy workers.
A workforce of around 3,600 therapists was trained in the first years of the programme and by 2014/15 around 6,000 therapists will be in post.
In each SHA, Primary Care Trusts have commissioned providers to deliver IAPT services. The NHS Operating Framework commits all PCTs to manage improved access levels and to achieve a minimum recovery rate so that more than half of those receiving treatment will move to recovery.
